Dear Scientists,
Despite the multiplicity of research aimed at defining the concept of sustainability as an approach that most countries and governments seek to adopt for the dimensions it encompasses, especially the developmental and economic dimensions, and despite the bulk of the problems recorded at the environmental level, many international organizations seek through international reports and conferences to urge the countries to adopt sustainability.
The current conditions that the world is witnessing due to the population increase and the large expansion of urban areas have led to fundamental imbalances in using natural energies and in nature itself due to the massive pollution that has been caused by Global climatic changes, causing continuous droughts and changing levels of precipitation, which in turn led to a scarcity of water, a shortage of agricultural production, and lack of food security, especially in the poorest countries.
These international climate changes, which also cause natural hazards, most notably hurricanes and floods, landslides, earthquakes, and global warming, necessitated a reconsideration of many countries’ policies to adapt to these natural, industrial, and nuclear hazards in order to reduce their severity.
The Kahramanmaraş earthquake is two earthquakes that struck southern Turkey, where the first occurred at 4:17 am local time (1:17 am UTC) on February 6, 2023. It had a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was west of the city of Gaziantep. Its impact extended to Syria as well, due to the proximity of its center to the Syrian-Turkish border. This earthquake is considered one of the strongest in the history of Türkiye and Syria. Nine hours later, at 13:24 pm local time (10:24 UTC), another earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale occurred in Ekin Ozu near the city of Kahramanmaraş. The number of victims of these two earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, according to preliminary estimates, amounted to more than 51,000 dead and 120,000 injured and caused severe material damage in both countries. According to the latest official statistics, the death toll in Turkey and Syria as a result of the earthquake has exceeded 50,000.
Natural disasters are a major impediment to development because, every year, these disasters cause hundreds of billions of dollars in losses, not only loss of life but also economic loss. For some countries, the average annual loss from such disasters is equivalent to more than 50 percent of their annual social expenditures. So we cannot really achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) unless we also address the disasters’ risks.
The increasing frequency of natural hazards along with the record of a period of drought in the Mediterranean basin with the beginning of the year 2023 is a turning point that requires rethinking by countries to provide short and medium-term strategies to cope with water scarcity and adopt schemes of risk protection for the safety of humanity and to reduce the size of recorded losses, especially on the economic level, as well as the protection of major urban communities and urban heritage sites, which are historical footprints that cannot be rebuilt because they represent historical evidence for future generations.
Objectives of the 5th International Conference on Sustainable Development and Space:
The conference aims to invite specialists and researchers in various disciplines to develop practical and scientific solutions that can be adopted from the perspective of sustainable development, limiting natural disasters and climate change, achieving food security and sustainability for urban communities as a strategy that must be adopted by states and governments to develop and preserve natural resources and use them rationally and sustainably.
